The Awards have been organised and moderated by the IADH Scientific Committee chaired by Dr Denise Faulks. iADH is delighted and proud to introduce five internationally renowned Professors in Special Care Dentistry from the iADH Scientific Committee who have agreed to host and judge the awards competition. Prof. dr. Luc Marks DDS, MSc, PhD

iADH President & Chair of Oral Presentation Session

Prof. Luc Marks is chair of the Centre of Special Care in Dentistry at Ghent University hospital, Belgium and Guest Professor at department Paediatric & Preventive dentistry at the University of Zagreb- Croatia. Major research interests are the treatment of Special Care patients including epidemiology and ethics and he has published over 80 international papers/ book chapters.
Prof.Marks is iADH member since 1994 and iADH council member for Belgium 2010-2018. Currently Prof. Marks is president of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (IADH), president-elect of the international dental ethics and law society (IDEALS) and regional clinical advisor Europe/Eurasia of the Special Olympics Special Smiles program. He serves in the editorial board of Special Care in Dentistry and ACTA Stomotologica Croatica. From November 1st 2020 he is appointed as chair of the Centre of Dental and Oral Health Sciences, University medical Centre Groningen, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

professor pedro diz dios

MD, DDS, PhD, EDiOM, FDS RCS (Edin)

Pedro Diz Dios is qualified in Medicine and is a Specialist in Stomatology at Santiago de Compostela University (Spain). He trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Freiburg University Hospital, gaining his Doctor of Philosophy PhD (Freiburg University, Germany). He is Professor, Consultant, Head of the Special Needs Unit, and co-director of the Masters degree course on “Dentistry for patients with systemic diseases”, at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Santiago de Compostela University. He is a Council member of the Spanish Society of Dentistry for Special Needs Patients and of the International Association of Disability & Oral Health (IADH). He is a member of the IADH Curriculum Working Group and IADH Scientific Committee and an European Delegate of the Global Oral Cancer Forum. He is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the UCL-Eastman Dental Institute (England). He is the Editor in Chief of “Special Care Dentistry Journal”, he is an Associate Editor of “Oral Diseases Journal” and of “Medicina Oral Cirugía Oral Patología Bucal”. He has lectured in 17 different countries, written over 200 papers cited on MEDLINE and co-authored and edited several books.

Professor blanaid daly

BA BDent Sc FFGDP (UK) PhD FFPHM FHEA

Blánaid Daly qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1983 and subsequently worked in the Irish Community and Hospital Dental Services from 1984 to 1990. She moved to the UK in late 1990, and joined the Dental School at King’s College London (KCL) a research assistant and then Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Dental Public Health (DPH). She was course director for the MSc in DPH and later the MSc in Community Dental Practice developing researchand  face to face and e-learning formats for internal and distance learning postgraduate students. She completed her PhD on the needs of homeless and was accepted on to the GDC specialist list in Dental Public Health and in Special Care Dentistry. In 2010 Blánaid became academic lead in Special Care Dentistry at KCL.  Blánaid returned to Ireland in 2016 as Professor of Special Care Dentistry at the Dublin Dental University Hospital & Trinity College  Dublin and is Head of the Department of Public& Child Dental Health. Her research interests relate to service delivery and interventions  to reduce health inequalities in people living with disability and marginalized groups. She is a member of the scientific committee of the iADH . In 2019 she  was appointed a commissioner on the new Lancet Commission on Oral Health.

professor gustavo molina

Gustavo Molina is Head Professor in, Universidad Católica de Córdoba for Dental Materials and Disability and Oral Health. He is also Associate Professor at the Dental Materials Department, The Dental Faculty, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. He holds two PhD’s and a large number of peer reviewed publications. His first doctorate was in the area of Craniofacial Research related to Down Syndrome and a second was defended at the Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands) related to the use of minimal intervention dentistry in Patients with Special Needs. He initiated and ran the DINOH network for ten years which was an online library of resources for researchers and teachers of SCD with a grant from the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (iADH). He has been the Chair of the iADH International Advisory Committee (2018-2020) and is a member of the iADH Scientific Committee. He has more than 28 years of experience in providing a full range of care for people with disabilities. He worked under the direction and surveillance of Dr Rodolfo Castillo Morales, the world leader in Oral Motor Therapy and developed resources to aid and promote the use of Oral Motor Therapy across Europe and South America.

professor shelagh anne thompson

BDS, MPhil, Dip Clin Hypnosis, PhD, MSND RCS Ed, FHEA, MFDS RCS Eng.

Shelagh graduated at University of Wales 1979. She was Reader and Honorary Consultant in Sedation and Special Care Dentistry in Cardiff University and was appointed Professor and Honorary Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at University of Liverpool.   Shelagh chaired British Society of Disability and Oral Health (BSDH) Teachers Group and became BSDH President in 2008, and is currently International Representative. Shelagh co-authored the UK Specialist Training Curriculum in SCD and examined for Royal Colleges of Surgeons Edinburgh and  England; Tri-Collegiate and Diploma specialty exams, and national and international PhD, MSc and Diploma programmes. 

Shelagh has been an active member of iADH for over two decades and co-chaired iADH Education Committee to produce the Undergraduate Curriculum and Postgraduate Curriculum Guidance in Special Care Dentistry. Shelagh was Editor of Journal of Disability and Oral Health (2011-2018) and developed the Doctorate Programme in Special Care Dentistry at University of Liverpool with completion of the first professional doctorate awarded in England in 2020.
